Walking through Times Square: A Portrait Series by Roland Fischer
Roland Fischer's project aims to portray the multitudes, New Yorkers and visitors, passing through Times Square. Each person photographed by Fischer becomes a member of an urban social group, located in an actual rather than virtual place.

Times Square as Urban Passageway
If New York City represents the international convergence of people, Times Square focuses this mass transit of people into a single aperture of time and space. Times Square has become an international media hub for commerce and entertainment. The building facades create a spectacle of light and image that is unrivaled elsewhere in the city. Over 2 million people pass through the gateway of Times Square every year. It is a diverse group of people, Broadway theater crowds, average New Yorkers who work in the numerous high-rise buildings, and visitors who go to the theater, shopping and entertainment complexes. Upon entering Time Square, the city becomes charged, creating a unique time and space felt by each person passing through it. Fischer's proposal for a Time Square portrait series aims for “an invisible portrait of space,” in the sense that anyone who arrives in Times Square during the sitting period arrives during a set time period. leaving their imperceptible mark in their passing. Fischer's portraits provide evidence of this temporary inhabitation of people in a specific place.
